With the arrival of numerous international organisations
and companies in neighbouring Geneva, the pays
de Gex has seen in little over one generation
a complete change to its former character. Once
a barely known agricultural province, the area
between the Jura Mountains and Lake Geneva is
now home to many internationals, with new transport
networks, commerces, entertainment and activities
all established to support and provide for the
rapidly growing community.
Geneva
Lake Geneva is one of the largest lakes in Western
Europe being 73km long, 582km² in area and
310 metres deep. The Geneva basin was scooped
out by the mighty Rhone glacier during the last
ice age. As the ice melted, Lake Geneva increased
to be far bigger than we know it today. The Pays
de Gex lies on the fertile soils left behind by
the glacier and the lake.
