Museums
There are a number of museums in the region:
- Fire-fighters museum, Gex
Open Saturdays from April to end November for
a comprehensive guided tour.
- Chateau Voltaire, Ferney
Home of the great philosophical and literary
figure of the 1700’s, Voltaire gave his
name to the town of Ferney, where he spent the
last 20 years of his life. Guided tours of the
chateau and grounds are available from mid May
to end September
- Fort l’Ecluse
A spectacular sight especially when lit up at
night, this fortress dates back to the 13th
century and has been used by a variety of occupations
throughout its history, now hosts in the summer
months a selection of musical, theatrical and
historical shows.
- Physics Museum CERN
Free entry year round from Monday – Saturday.
The giant particle accelerator at CERN encircles
at least half the Pays de Gex. CERN also boasts
the birth of the world wide web.
- Museum of precious stones,
Mijoux
A gift shop and living museum behind the workshop.
- Museum of rural life,
Cessy
The Pays de Gex as it once was.
